June 24: San Diego, CA @ Belly Up Tavern * $
June 25: Tucson, AZ @ Rialto Theatre * $
June 28: Lubbock, TX @ Jake’s *

And description of the album:

"The goal was to push my brain to places it didn't want to go. The idea was to not have any idea - to keep myself confused about what I was doing," frontman Will Sheff says about Okkervil River's newest album. "I produced it myself so that I could extend the songwriting process all the way through to the very last second of recording, so the songs would never really stop changing." The resulting record, 'I am Very Far,' is a startling break from anything this band has done before. By turns terrifying and joyous, violent and serene, grotesque and romantic, it's a celebration of forces beyond our control.

LA show the day before my birthday! Fuck yeah!

I'm in a story telling mood so heres how I became acquainted with Okkervil River: I lived next door to this guy the summer after I graduated from college. There was door that connected our rooms that had been sealed up but the space underneath the door was obviously still there. We used to pass notes and things back and forth under the door. One day he sent over a burned copy of Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See and I fell in love. Now whenever I listen to Okkervil River I'm reminded of that summer.

new single is available for download from their website; each time i listen to it i like it a little more but it's not my favourite of their work by any stretch. i feel like will is just yelling, kind of.

i do dig the 12" they released with mermaid single and b-side, though.

Yeah, I was put off by the song when they played it on Jimmy Fallon.

My OR stories are about going to see them right after Black Sheep Boy came out, but getting the date wrong and missing it.

Later, after my wife got into them too, we went to about 3 shows in a year and managed to talk with Will each time. He must have been wondering about the two middle-aged people who were following the band around.
Laughing He was very easy to talk too though.

Currently listening to the new album for the second time. I haven't formed an opinion yet. I only know that I like the first song. I think the first two tracks have a bit of a dark, funky vibe to them...

People are really turned off to the new album. Why? What has really changed since the last two albums?

Thumbs up.

If you want to add a new layer to your listening of the new album, look up the Will Sheff interview for Spin where he goes in depth on the songwriting and recording process. I found it to be pretty interesting. Did you notice the one sound in Track 2 that is actually some guy ripping tape rhythmically?

I don't understand why this seems to be looked over right now. Wake And Be Fine seems to be a modern day Subterranean Homesick Blues with it's stream of conscious lyrics in your face. The video is a perfect compliment with it's delayed video echoing the delayed rhythm parts on the song.

This album is pretty interesting and kinda hard to crack, but it seems like the music community should at least be attempting instead of worrying so much about Tyer, The Creator and those guys or whatever else is occupying their music listening time right now.

I'm liking it to a certain degree. More each time I listen. The first 3 songs caught me right away. The lyrics are still as great as ever.

Can't wait to see them.

yeah, I saw 'So Come Back, I'm Waiting' on a setlist from the New York show. I never thought I would hear that song live. Now I'm twice as much looking forward to the show. I'm gonna die right in the front row.

Glad the show was great for you.

yes! i think that one has gotten the most of my OR playcounts over the last few months, and it was great to hear it live. i like the surprise of not knowing what bands are going to play so i didn't look up other setlists. i wasn't expecting to hear it and it absolutely made the night.

I'm glad that song gets some love. I was singing it (with a few words wrong) at the top of my lungs in the car yesterday.

They're playing in Melbourne in October... if I get a job and can save up $50 in this expensive town I'd love to see them again.

do it, do it, do it - will will kill - especially down under where the tour will take on a new dimension

christ, I forgot to post about my show at The Fox in Oakland.

Fucking amazing ALL the way through. What an artist and performer at the top of his game. The way he handled his guitar throughout the set made it look like an extension of his body. The vocals came through clearly and his lyrics are as good as it gets.

What I really appreciated is that he doesn't fool around with being moody and remote. He just plays his best stuff and utterly gives it up every song.

And, omg, the a capella song during the encore was staggering after all the jamming earlier.

I love you , man.

You were right, Dan. Absolutely new dimension. I can't believe I almost didn't go to that show (just bought my ticket this afternoon, ha).

The set list was different than recent ones that I've looked up, with the highlight being a stripped down 2-man version of No Key, No Plan followed directly by So Come Back, I'm Waiting (can't get enough). They did a 3-song encore with a cover of some Australian band people were excited about but I didn't know, then Westfall going into Unless Its Kicks.

I was able to get waaaay closer to the front at this show than Toronto, which was awesome. Really appreciated Lauren's guitar holy shit. Will was amazing as expected. So much better than Toronto! From the beginning to the middle I thought the crowd wasn't really giving what the band deserved, with attention and applause and such, but by the end everyone was grooving and the drunk chatty girls behind me left and we were all sad when Will came back out and said, "we would play more but they won't let us!".

Also, did any OR fans catch Will Sheff's lovestreams? He mentioned he made a whole album of songs in a Brooklyn basement and released a couple of them. Kinda interesting. http://lovestreamsdreams.tumblr.com/music

Thanks for the update Courtney. I knew he couldn't stay in hibernation for long. But no SF date? There is a 4 day gap between LA and Portland, so it's got to be then. One tour he did a solo show here plus two full band shows.

I guess I'm a real dummy because I didn't realise that they were releasing a new album! Ha! When I read Will talking about how they really liked "this record" and "kept coming back to it" and such I figured they were touring off I Am Very Far again. Either I haven't been paying enough attention or they kept this well under wraps. Oh well! Great news! And they moved from Jagjaguwar to ATO Records.

Here's a nice groovy track they just put up on facebook:

also, a funny thing I saw on reddit: if you stack album art for The Stage Names on top of The Stand Ins you get a complete image... clever.

More! More!

This album is more autobiographical, looking at Meriden, NH, and the people and places Will knew growing up and all that.

They have an interactive map (!) of Will's hometown and another new song. I'm really interested in what the rest of this album is going to sound like, 'cause I feel like I Am Very Far took a bit of a different turn, a bit. anyway! jam on.

Posting a lot but my friends don't care and I just love all the sneak-peek goodies they're dropping.

Pitchfork did a bit with Will and an old friend playing Down Down The Deep River in various open mics. I love the people chatting in the background. Gives that real open mic-ey feel and makes the stars seem Just Like Us! They use baskets! People talk over them at open mic nights!

I'm liking the studio version. Gotta give Will his due for writing a 6:30 song with very little instrumental. He has always had a lot to say.

The upbeat tempo is nice along with the atmospheric chimes and horns. Only small complaint would be that he doesn't have any dramatic break in the verse/chorus pattern that would make it much more epic for me.

Definitely looking forward to the rest. I did get a little thrown by 'I Am Very Far' too - but there about 6 really good songs in there.

Argh, I am guessing he won't announce SF tour date until after playing that festival on August 25 in Monterey.
