I'm not hearing the riot grrl comparison to Glendora. I think it sounds more like straight-laced alternative rock or 90's "pop-punk". I don't hear 7 Year Bitch or Bikini Kill or Babes In Toyland or Bratmobile or any of those girls singing Glendora. Its far too poppy, and hooky (not that thats a bad thing, UTB fan here). Still love the old version but had to offer my two cents there. _________________ Beauty fades. Dumb is forever. |

It looks like for the time being mojo is accepting donations from people that will go to charity in exchange for hearing the songs early before they are leaked to the public. Initially the donations were to help cover the eBay cost but that's been payed back so now any donations will just go to charity. Or you could wait and just hear the tracks with the general public. _________________ Beauty fades. Dumb is forever. |

I have to admit, I wasn't too interested in these songs at first. I'm not a huge fan of the TOAL/Initial Friend stuff but these songs are a great find! I think if these songs would have came out in 98, RK would have had the fame they always sought. Jenny would have been Gwen Stefani. _________________ There is nothing stopping you, there is nothing stopping me. So let that beat control your body baby! |

I think "load sock" is really funny. I miss Jenny's frankness from their early stuff. "Wet nap" doesn't have the same punch as load sock. But you know, I probably would have gone one further and said "am I your cum rag?" but shit, that's just me.
I think Jenny has a much more twisted, fucked up sense of humor then we realize and this is a small taste of it.
Now after all of this semen business, I must say I'm not terribly impressed with this version of Glendora. I preferred the soft vocals paired with the fucked up lyrics. It makes it so much more creepy! This "harder" version of Glendora just seems kind of lame. _________________ I'm Julie. I am the real life Daria. It's a fact I've come to accept. |

Ahhh so that explains what the "wet nap" is referencing but I still don't get what the hell "freestyle walking" is supposed to mean. I don't think this other version of Glendora is all bad but I think it got most of its points for being an unreleased version of a song I love alot. And I'm definitely not hearing the riot grrl thing. But I like it. Its a nice surprise. _________________ Beauty fades. Dumb is forever. |

| It just means that, to him, she's like an inanimate object (his wet nap, load sock, etc.), yet one that is capable of walking around on its own. |

I have to admit that until I heard Sandbox "Glendora," I thought wet nap meant, like, a handi-wipe or some other sanitized napkin. And I thought freestyle walking referred to that sport, I guess, where you walk creatively, bouncing and jumping and tumbling or whatnot. I was only half-watching but I think there was even a joke on last week's Happy Endings about freestyle walking. But what does that have to do with Glendora? What Heather says makes the most sense, but why the freestyle walking, y'know? I think the thing I respond to most in Glendora is that its a song full of weird, specific images: freestyle walking, the prom dress at the bus stop in Duarte, eating a sundae on New Year's Eve at Denny's... |

You know what? Now that you mention it, I think that's what I love about it too, particularly the mention of seemingly random cities/states like in other Jenny or Rilo songs (Somewhere in Laredo, Cop pulled me over on Beverly Glen, Orlando streets, Sorry Angel went to Reno, build a place in Coldwater Canyon etc) especially since I know many of these cities or neighborhoods so I always get a little music video/movie in my head of whats going on. Have no idea why that gets me so good. Maybe its cause I like to travel. _________________ Beauty fades. Dumb is forever. |

Does Jenny really say "I take them to western or a vine."? It sounds completely strange! Does that refer to a specific place?
I definitely think 13 is my favorite, but I totally dig cousin to cousin. 13 reminds me a lot of 85, which is one of my favorite songs, especially the intro. I knew from 10 seconds in to that song that it would be awesome. I have no clue what c2c is about but I dig the groovy intro and general weirdness to the song.
By the way, these new (OLDDDD) songs made my week/month! What a treat. I'm also completely embarrassed that wet nap refers to.. well you know; I didn't realize that at all. Really awesome job getting this stuff =) |

Western and Vine are streets in Hollywood--deep in the heart of Hollywood, actually. _________________ "Right is right even if no one does it, and wrong is wrong even if everyone does it."

I just had to come out of my 4 year lurkdom to say THANK YOU for making these tracks available. Amazing!
Has anyone taken a stab at the lyrics to Cousin to Cousin? I can make out most of the lyrics, but the one that bugs me the most is the line after the first set of "that's what my daddy does, But what about me?"
I like Cousin to Cousin the most, but 13 is the one that's been stuck in my head
Thanks again for sharing these tracks! |

My (very poor) first attempt at deciphering the Cousin to Cousin lyrics:
Cousin to cousin, and hand to hand
Pull this piece from mouth to can (??)
Took him up to show a cliff
Sailed him off and made his rip (??)
As he ride, their seconds weigh (??)
Flipping through his only fate
Face that showed itself before
Was the cousin who wasn't a cousin no more
Caging the soul one drop at a time
Sipping on vintage T-bird wine
Pulled the cat from out the grave
Strung it up and watched it sway
As he's done without a twitch
Pumping (pounding?) the depth of that genius ditch (stitch?)
I am a person, i know people at all (?)
To the voice of a man who was just three feet tall
Felon to felon, and man to man
Desert's screwed, let's try it again
Took a day where next week rest (??)
Lit a match, he did his best
As he watched his dream oil burn
Tension took a different turn
Boss's daughter passing by, into the flames went the sweet Lorelai
That's what my daddy does
That's what my daddy does
But what about me, when he brings those heads home for tea (??)
That's what my daddy does
That's what my daddy does
But what about me, what about me, what about me
Cousin to cousin, and hand to hand
Oh, the tragic desert sand
Packed their looms and did set sail
And this is the end of this ghastly tale |

| Don't get me wrong, CTC sounds great... when you're not listening to the lyrics. But I completely get why she doesn't like this song. Jenny is a lyricist, it's what her music is known for (IMO)... the lyrics to this song are just... messy. Not her style at all. |

here's how I've been singing it. I can't make out a bunch of words though
Cousin to cousin
in hand in hand
pulled his piece from out the can
took him off to show the cliff
sailed him off and made his ?rip?
as he arrive there seconds wait
flipping through his only fate
face that showed itself before
was the cousin who wasn't a cousin no more
purging the soul one drop at a time
sipping on vintage tbird wine
pull the cat from out the grave
stung it up and watched it sway
as he stand without a twitch
pondering the death/depth of that genius ditch
i am ????? people at all
said the voice of a man who was just 3 feet tall
felon to felon and man to man
desert screwed us, let's try it again
took a dime for a next request
lit a match he did his best
as he watch his dream all burn
tension took a different turn
boss' daughter passing bye
into the flames went the sweet Lorelei
that's what my daddy does
that's what my daddy does
but what about me
When it ???
that's what my daddy does
that's what my daddy does
but what about me?
what about me?
what about me?
cousin to cousin
in hand in hand
oh, the tragic dessert sand
packed their looms and did set sail
and this is the end of this ghastly tale |

Cousin to cousin and hand to hand
Pull this piece from mouth again
Took him off to Showman Cliff
Sailed, then moved, then made his riff
As he lie there seconds away
Flipping through his only fate
Face that showed itself before
Was the cousin who wasn't a cousin no more
Purging his soul one drop at a time
Sipping on vintage T-Bird wine
Pull the cat from mouth to grave
Strung it up and watched it sway
As he stand without a twitch
Pondering the death of that genius ditch
I am a prisoner, no people at all
Said the voice of a man who was just three feet tall
Felon to felon and man to man
Desert screwed us, try it again
Took a day, their next request
Minuteman, he did his best
As he watched his dream oil burn
Tension took a different turn
Bosses daughter passin by
Into the flames went the sweet Lauralei
That's what my daddy does
But what about me
When it brings those histovertea
That's what my daddy does....
But what about me, what about me, what about me
Cousin to cousin and hand to hand
Oh the tragic desert sand
Packed their looms and did set sail
And this is the end of this ghastly tale
I don't care if I sing it wrong forever, I'm still going to sing it cousin to cousin and aunt to aunt because I'm so damn convinced that what's Jenny said the lyrics were. (I wish I hadn't been drinking/wrote it down) |
