Anyone ever notice how Draggin' Around shares some lyrics with Breakin' Up? Namely:

Quote:
Here's to all the words that we'll never speak
Here's to all the pretty girls that you're going to meet

Just thought that was kinda weird...

My sister doesn't like dragging around because she doesn't like the recycled lyrics, sees it as a flaw/lack of creativity. I think its really interesting and begs the question: which song came first and what is it about these particular lyrics and Jenny felt so strongly about them to put them in two songs. Obviously they had to have some sort of meaning or she had to like them a lot in order for them to re-appear like that. Or I could just be reading into too much...

It's interesting you guys should point this out. I've noticed the similar lyrics as well. I think in this case, I would speculate that they might have been stretching to find something to release as a b-side here. In my opinion of the Under the Blacklight b-sides, Draggin' Around is far inferior to Big Break, which isn't exactly a home run either.

That said, other greats including Bruce Springsteen have released songs that share lyrics (one of my all-time favorite albums, Nebraska, is littered with them). Maybe it is laziness. I prefer to look at it as an idea the artist really wanted to get across, and we just get a glimpse into their song-creation process.

I noticed this when I first heard this song, and I kind of figured that she just knew she wanted to use those lines somewhere but wasn't sure where they fit in better, and ended up deciding to put Breakin' Up on the album because it's more upbeat and catchy.

But now that I think about it, Jewel has a couple of songs that use the same lyrics as well. Hmm.

Draggin Around is the best song from the UTB era IMO.

Wow, I never made that connection before! Though I did always feel like there was something familiar about Draggin' Around.

That's sort of cool, though, since the songs sound so different from each other. I think the lyrics work well in both.

Remember the song Jenny was doing on one of the Rabbit Fur Coat tours that was never put out..."No Leaving Tonight" or something. They did it on a radio spot too. It starts out "There is no good, no how, no good reason..." And, "Black Sand" starts out "No good, no how..." And then, there were some "Dreamworld" lyrics that I think originated in one of The Elected's songs, too, right?

I think this actually happens a lot in the writing process. Phrasings and images and concepts sort of stick around and reappear and change form...and I don't think it's a flaw at all...I think it's actually really great to see that part of the writing process manifest itself in these songs.

Just thoughts...

I've been listening to this song a bunch lately, and I really, really like it. Just thought I'd throw that in there as well.

"Draggin' Around" is very good and I really like "Big Break". I think those would have been among the top seven songs on the record if they had been included. But I did not come here to trash UTB, just to say that "Draggin' Around" is strong.

I wonder what the other songs they recorded sound like. I remember reading somewhere that they have a more rockin' version of "Pull Me In Tighter," which seemed pretty rockin' to me when I heard it on Austin City Limits.

I don't think its lazyness at all. I've written songs that contain similar lyrics because sometimes one song will evolve into another. Also alot of times an artists will really like an artist or phrase and they'll re-use it with the intent that the other song is not going to be released. Depending on which song was created first, I'd be willing to be what happened was Draggin Around was a song they didnt feel to be worthy to be put on the album but Jenny really liked that particular phrase so she "borrowed" it from herself. I actually like when artists re-use things because it gives a feel of recurring themes, which I like.
