I just started to learn photoshop. my question might sound retarded, but I just cannot figure this out on my own and have no patience to browse online hours to figure out this easy trick.
So...I added auto shape on my image, but the autoshape is just an outline... I wanna fill the shape with color. How do I do that?  |

push the delete key to clear the area, then select the paint bucket tool and select the color you want, then click in that area you want to fill in.

ok, i got one. how do i 'cut out' something. example, say i wanted to use a band logo from an album cover and it's black print on a red background and i want just the logo on a blue background. how do i trim away all the red to just have the logo?

I'd suggest using the magic wand tool and either hold shift as you click, or set it to "add to selection" up along the top. Then just keep selecting the red. If you accidently get more than the red, hit undo(ctrl+z) and lower the tolerance level. After you have all of the red selected, hit delete. Don't forget to crop down to just the logo

I'd use the magic lasso tool thing, which will pretty much select all the red, since it's very discernable from the black background...click the lasso, and get the one with the square on it...then just click and drag it around the text, connect back to the start...then if all the words are tied together (ie: cursive or so) then just cut and paste...otherwise hold SHIFT and do the same thing for the remaining letters...

check this tutorial page out! It is step by step with pictures...
If you are a patient person, I think you should use pen tool...It is very simple. . .but could be time consuming.

Here's one...
i know you can do this, i just forget how.
okay, let's say i have a 200 x 200 picture of some text. I want it to be 500 x 500. I could just use Transform, but then the 500 x 500 text will be kinda jaded and fuzzy (ie: not clean). Now, there's a way to select the text (200x200) and [create a vector??] <-- do whatever goes there, and then photoshop kinda learns what it's like and then i can make it bigger, and photoshop builds on what it learns and makes the new text 500x500 but not fuzzy at all.
i can't remember if it has to do with vectors at all, that word just popped into my head for some reason.

the way i've seen it done would similar to using an eraser tool and manually erasing all the red and then for tight corners you can zoom in and erase. is that what the pen tool does? |

No, the pen tool is kinda like the Lasso tool, only it can be more accurate...

yeah. I know exactly what you are talking about, but pen tool is way more accurate and ...It is more 'stress free' & faster.
Click pen tool and also click 'create path' from the tool bar above.
Everytime you click, it will create dots and also automatically connects those dots with a line...It is hard to explain, but it is way more stable than using eraser and you can be more detailed and clean 'cut'. I suggest you look at the link that I posted! It is a good skill to know. |

i prefer to hit Q when i'm doing selecting, and then just go over what i want selected with the brush tool.
